Finally made it to Avatara in Calgary! I've been wanting to go for ages, but it is slightly out of the way from where I usually shop when in Calgary. This time though we'd decided ahead of time that we were going to drop by and order take out.
Located at 3406 3rd Avenue NW, Calgary. The outside doesn't look promising, but don't let that put you off. Inside is a small, tidy and nicely decorated restaurant. They have a fantastic pizza oven! The lady on staff that day was great! Very helpful and cheerful. The place was busy with people eating in and coming in to order take out.
They now have a second location! I've not been yet, have you? Their second location is at 14343 MacLeod Trail SW Calgary.
We tried the chicken fingers which were very good and I really liked the plum sauce. Ordered four pizzas - Maui, a half Shiekh, a half Crusty Cowboy, and a half New Yorker.
I was disappointed in the Maui. I love pizza with pineapple and ham, but I found this one to be too plain and I wished the ham and bacon was crispier.
The Shiekh with its hummus, feta cheese, house made bruschetta, banana peppers and crushed falafel chips was a hit! Very tasty and on the must try again list!
The Crusty Cowboy was unique with crushed cashews and a drizzle of honey along with a chili-lime BBQ sauce, crushed pineapple, mushrooms and the house made bruschetta. I wasn't sure about this one when we ordered it, but it turned out to be a great combination of flavours and I would order it again.
The New Yorker was your basic pepperoni pizza. It was good, but not on my re-order list.
The crusts were thin like I like them. I think if we had eaten them in the restaurant when they were hot they would have been crispier. We did do take out and the pizza's weren't piping hot when we ate them and I think these factored in on the crusts not being super crispy.
Need to eat those veggies so we ordered the organic veggie platter which was your basic cucumber, carrot and cherry tomato with ranch dip. I didn't like the dip and wouldn't order it again as I don't think it was worth the money.
All in all I would say my experience was a 8/10 as I was disappointed in the Maui. Would I go again? You betcha I sure would! There are quite a few pizza's I haven't tried yet. I look forward to trying the Budda with spicy Thai red curry sauce and the Guru with butter chicken sauce. They have such unique flavour combinations and as a Celiac how can I resist a 100% gluten-free pizza place!! Ohhh and I just had to get one of those bags of Falafel Chips!!! On my must buy again list as they were crunchy and delicious.
Check out their website at www.avatarapizza.com. They also have a food truck which I haven't tried yet. They not only have pretty damn good food, but a great philosophy. They are committed to paying a living wage so their staff can have a work/life balance and they care about the enviroment. Have you been? If so, what was your favourite pizza? If you haven't do give them a try and let me know what your think?
