If you find yourself in Bridgeland, Calgary then do try the Blue Star Diner. It is a cozy place with excellent service. They try to locally source their ingredients. Yes, they have a dedicated gluten-free fryer!! Always makes my day. The servers are very knowledgeable regarding what celiac's can and can't eat. Pretty large gluten-free selection. As they are not 100% gluten-free there is always the chance of cross-contamination, but they do their best to make sure your food is safe. I feel comfortable eating here. I've been for breakfast and dinner. Both times were fantastic.
I love going out for breakfast and brunch. I think it is great that I don't have to cook or clean up and we can all order something we like. I have had their Bennies which are very tasty. Love their hash browns. Sorry no photos taken. It was a no picture day. Do you do that too? Sometimes you need to just keep that camera/phone in your pocket or purse. Next time I'm there for breakfast I'll have to take some photos. ^_^
We made a special trip for dinner and weren't disappointed. I had the Buttermilk Fried Chicken Sandwich. OMG!!! It was a piece of heaven. Other celiacs will understand how fantastic and rare it is to be able to get gluten-free fried chicken! I was so excited. It is served with honey and pancetta which just elevated it up one more notch in my book.
Just look at the size of it!! My mouth is watering just thinking about it! The gluten-free chicken was so delicious as was the gluten-free bun. I need to go back and try their gluten-free Southern Fried Chicken next!
My only minor complaint would be that I prefer thicker fries. But, it is such a minor thing and the fries were yummy and the portion size is fantastic! They use Kennebec potatoes for the fries. Kennebec potatoes have a low water content, so they make good fries.
I do recommend the Blue Star Diner. It is not very large and can be very busy, so do make a reservation. Check them out. Here is a link to their website at http://www.bluestardiner.ca/.
