Went to try a new coffee shop in Canmore the other day - the Canary Coffee. I had a delicious London Fog, and enjoyed sitting at the bench window and watching life go by on Main Street.
They have their menu posted at the front of the entrance. I could not find a website, but did find their facebook page if you'd like to check them out.
I was attracted by the large "gluten-free" sign in the front window. But, was disappointed. They do have a few pre-packaged gluten-free treats in a basket by the till. You can see them in the photo below. But, there are no gluten-free items on the menu. I was told that sometimes the soup maybe gluten-free. In fairness they had only opened, and they do plan on adding some gluten-free baked goods in the future. I asked about how they'd handle cross-contamination since they would be making the gluten-free items with the regular items. They stated that their gluten-free baked goods would not be safe for Celiacs. If you are gluten-intolerant or just avoiding gluten, then it would be fine.>
I enjoyed the experience and my London Fog. But, I'm not sure if I will go back, as the options for a Celiac are restricted to a drink, and some of the pre-packaged items above. I loved sitting at their window bench. The Cafe filled up and people looked like they were enjoying the food. I may go back just for a tea or coffee, but not to eat. Perhaps with some education regarding celiac disease, the cafe may evolve into a place Celiac's could enjoy.
