Went to The Canadian Brewhouse in Harvest Hills, Calgary Alberta, after seeing that other celiacs had had good experiences there. I called the restaurant and asked if they could accommodate a celiac, and I was put at ease by their response. The staff I spoke with understood right away what a celiac is and that we need a gluten-free diet and took my concerns seriously. They let me know that there were items on the menu that are or could be made gluten-free, and that they have a dedicated gluten-free fryer! Which is always awesome to hear. ^-^
The star of the show would be the Manitoba Yam Fries with the Ancho Chipotle sauce!!! They were so delicious! I highly recommend giving them a try. The yam fries were crispy on the outside and soft in the middle and the sauce! Oh, I need that sauce in my life! Just the right amount of sweet, heat and creaminess! Very enjoyable. Again do give them a try if you go. I could put that sauce on everything.
We were there on Wednesday, which is Wing Night. We ordered the Chipotle Mango Dry Rub Wings. They were tasty, but a tad tough and dry. I couldn't taste the mango and there was not alot of heat. I would order a sauce with the wings next time.
My husband and I shared the Crispy Chicken Cobb Salad. It was huge! Loads of iceberg lettuce with tomato, shredded carrot, red onion, cheddar cheese, a hard-boiled egg and a grilled chicken breast. We had it with the Valley Ranch dressing. I loved the presentation. Plenty for the two of us. Very tasty and filling. I do recommend sharing it.
Not all the sauces or dressings are gluten-free, so make sure to ask which ones are ok for a celiac to have.
The staff are great! I can't say enough about them. Very celiac aware. They were all very friendly and knowledgable. I believe The Canadian Brewhouse's staff at the Harvest Hills location are the restaurant's greatest asset!
Now, a bit about the but the building itself. Very large inside. Typical sports bar restaurant atmosphere, lots of TV's to watch sports. Clean, but a little worn at the edges. Note that the tables are high, so if you are short like me, be prepared to climb. The washrooms are on the lower floor, so be ready for stairs if you have mobility issues.
I recommend phoning ahead and making reservations, not because it was super busy when we went, but to give them a heads up about your dietary needs. We made our reservation early, at 5 pm. I like to go to mixed gluten/gluten-free restaurants early, because the place isn't as busy and to give the kitchen and wait staff time needed to limit cross-contamination. Also, I believe children are welcome until 8 pm, but do ask.
My family and I enjoyed our meal. It was your typical bar food. Other gluten-free options included burgers, fish and chips and pizza to name a few. Check out their website to see the complete menu.
