photo of gluten-free soup and toast at Alder's Cafe in Canmore Alberta

Are you a celiac looking for a place to have a cup of coffee, or a breakfast or quick lunch. Try out the Alder's Cafe.

It is not a 100% gluten-free cafe. When I was there for lunch the staff were aware of a celiac's needs in regards to worries about cross-contamination. I had the soup of the day (pictured above). It was a very tasty green vegetable soup with toasted gluten-free bread on the side and a tasty herb butter.

They don't have a dedicated gluten-free toaster, instead they toast the bread in a pan in the oven. As with all restaurants and cafes that are not 100% gluten-free, do ask the staff about their protocols for preventing cross-contamination and what dishes they recommend, because staff and policys do change. When I was at Alder's I spoke with one of the owners who was on the till that day, she seemed to understand a celiac's needs, and therefore I felt very comfortable as a celiac eating there.

Above is their special board. I didn't get a photo of the menu which is at the till because it was a busy day. You can check out their menu online. Here is a link to their (Alder Cafe & Grocery) website, and here is one to their online menu

It is a small place, but cosy. You can sit at the "bar" area, or at tables and soft chairs at large windows. The view are the condos in the area, but you can see the tops of the surrounding mountains on a nice day. I found all the staff to be cheerful and friendly.

I also had a London Fog. It was ok, I would like it to have had a stronger vanilla taste, but that is just my personal preference. It was a good cup of tea. Others in our group are not celiac's and they said that the food was delicious, in particular the burger got great reviews.

The Alder Cafe is located in the Alder's Grocery Store in Spring Creek, downtown Canmore area. The grocery store has a few gluten-free items. When I spoke with the owner she stated that they hope to expand their gluten-free menu offerings.

I had a relaxing and fun experience. I would love to try out their gluten-free breakfast one day. Have you been here? What was your experience like?
