buff bake birthday cake protein cookie

I was so excited to see this gluten-free cookie in the store. The packaging attracted me. The pretty light blue colour of the package, and that picture of the cookie with the lovely icing and sprinkles. I just had to buy one to try, and it was my birthday week, so what better way to celebrate than to buy myself a treat.

But, I was so disappointed when I opened the package and pulled out the cookie. Just look at that cookie in the photo! What happened to the icing and sprinkles? Oh yeah, I tried it. Yep even though it looked like that I just had to give it a go! The taste was horrible. It is a soft cookie, but the texture is not nice. It was gummy. I didn't like the flavour, it tasted old and bitter. I was so looking forward to a nice icing and crunchy sprinkles. It is difficult to buy new gluten-free products as they are so expensive and there is always the possibility that they won't live up to expectations. I won't buy this product again.

Has anyone bought this product? Did yours have any icing on it? What did you think of it? Would you buy it again?

Buff Bake does make other products. In their FAQ Page they state that their products are certified gluten-free, but they also state on the website and packaging that the products are manufactured in a facility that processes wheat, so you need to judge your own comfort level with that.

Also, one of the ingredients in their cookies is gluten-free oat flour. Now I have heard that a newly diagnosed celiac should not consume gluten-free oats or oat flour for about a year after you have been gluten-free and your blood tests are coming back normal. Some celiacs can never tolerate gluten-free oats. I need to keep a close watch on how much gluten-free oat products I consume as if I eat too much I do feel unwell. Now I would just like to note here that how you feel cannot be used as an indicator of being glutened or not. You can consume gluten and have no symptoms yet still be doing damage to your body. So please always read labels and be vigilant about cross-contamination and never consume regular oats and oat products as they can be contaminated with gluten containing grains.
