The Mumbai Local Restaurant in Canmore, Alberta has gluten-free options. I'm a celiac and here is my opinion on the celiac friendliness of this restaurant. Now this was my experience on this particular day. Your day maybe different, just like all restaurants your experience depends on factors such as how busy the restaurant is, staff and supply of ingredients.
We really enjoyed the food at Mumbai Local. Our server seemed to understand the needs of a celiac well. There are quite a few gluten-free options on the menu, but not all are safe for celiacs. Some are fried in a shared fryer. I always let the restaurant know ahead of time that a celiac is part of the group when I make the reservations. Our server was very good at letting me know what I could and couldn't order.
They have gluten-free roti!!!! Yes, you read correctly, gluten-free roti! Great texture and taste. They are made from fermented rice batter. The roti kept its shape and had a lovely slightly chewy soft texture. Went well with the curry as I didn't feel like eating rice. I will order again. I highly recommend you try it out.
Above are the gluten-free dishes we ordered. Very well presented.
My husband ordered the Old Delhi Butter Chicken which was gluten-free, so that I could taste test. It was very tasty, creamy and not too spicy. Perfect if you are looking for a curry that is not too hot.
I ordered the Veg Malabar Masala. Very delicous. It is quite spicy, but I like a bit of heat. It had a nice assortment of vegetables, but no asparagus as claimed on the menu. I didn't ask about it because they were super busy. I assumed that they had run out asparagus. This dish was great with the gluten-free roti.
I also tried the sweet lassi. Great flavour, not overly sweet, nice tang and creamy. Was perfect with my spicy meal. They also have a salty one and a mango one.
My husband ordered gluten naan. There is no gluten-free naan. I tried his butter chicken prior to him starting to eat, so no worries about cross-contamination from his naan. My only concern is that when the food was delivered to the table all the dishes except the roti were jammed on to a tray. I was a little concerned about potential cross-contamination with the gluten naan bread so close to my curry. I had forgotten to ask that the gluten part be brought out separately. But I looked closely to my food and it appeared ok.
I would go back. The food we ordered was delicious. I feel it is slightly above average celiac friendly, because my server was knowledgeable about celiac disease. I asked about ordering the Mumbai Bhaji as it is marked gluten-free on the menu, but my server informed me that it is fried in a shared fryer so not safe for a celiac. I recommend to call ahead and let them know you are a celiac and to ask that gluten and gluten-free dishes be brought to the table separately.
This is a small restaurant so I do suggest making reservations. It got very busy and quite a few people were turned away as they filled quickly. I try to go to restaurants at times when the restaurants are not as busy. My reasoning is that they have more time to take care of my food preparation and less chance of cross-contamination in prep or when the food is waiting to go out.
What do you do when you are going out for a meal? Do you call ahead and explain you are a celiac and ask if they have any options for you? Do you try to go at a quiet time? Do you ask tht the gluten and gluten-free dishes come to the table separately? What do you do to try and create a safe environment to eat in for a celiac? Do you only go to 100% gluten-free places? How comfortable are you going to mixed gluten and gluten-free places?
