easter 2021 dyed eggs in a bowl

Looking for a quick and easy Easter decoration? Then colouring boiled eggs is the way to go.

All you need is some eggs, food colouring, cups and water. First, you will need to boil your eggs. They should be hard boiled. I put mine in some cold salted water and bring to a boil and then lower to a simmer and cook for about 5 minutes, then turn off the heat. I let them sit for a minute or two in the hot water, drain and let cool.

Next, gather some containers to put the water, dye and eggs in. I used some small cups that would hold an egg fully covered by water. You could do multiple eggs in one large bowl if you want just one colour.

Any food colouring will do. I used Wilton's gel icing colours - red, blue and yellow. Take just a tiny bit of food colouring and mix in warm water. I use warm water as the gel dissolves better. You can add more colouring if you'd like a deeper colour or you could just leave the eggs in the coloured water longer.

Now let the eggs sit in the coloured water. I had mine in about 15 minutes. You can check periodically to see if they are the colour you want. Then remove from the dye and let dry on a plate lined with a paper towel.

When dry put them in a bowl or basket lined with coloured easter grass. If you aren't going to eat them the same day as made then the eggs should be stored in the fridge.

Don't worry if when peeled the eggs white is coloured, they are safe to eat because you used food colouring for icing.

We have not coloured eggs in years! It was great fun. You could also use the coloured eggs and have an Easter egg race! Line up with your egg in a spoon and run to the finish line!
