Khao San Thai Kitchen is a wonderful restaurant. The owners and staff are great. Very attentive and friendly. They are well aware of a celiac's dietary needs.

Except for the appetizers any of the dishes on the menu are either naturally gluten-free such as the curries and pad thai, or they can be made gluten-free by using gluten-free soya sauce and not using oyster sauce when cooked.

Only two of the appetizers are gluten-free: the salad rolls and the dumplings. I can highly recommend the Poung Chom-Poo dumplings.

Do let them know that you are a celiac and you will be well taken care of.

We have been here a few times, and always the food and service is great.

On previous visits I have enjoyed the green curry, the sweet and sour tofu, the pad thai and the tom yam soup.

beautiful gluten-free Poung Chom-Poo dumplings

The Poung Chom-Poo dumplings at Khao San Thai Kitchen are delicious and so pretty. This is one of two appetizers that are gluten-free. They were very tasty. Lovely soft and chewy dumpling with a mild Thai spiced minced chicken and crushed roasted peanut filling. We ordered a second one! Do ask for the chili sauce to have on the side. Both are gluten-free and very nice with the dumplings.

Pineapple Red Curry

The Pineapple Red Curry was slightly sweet and mildly hot. The pineapple is fresh, so it doesn't have a strong overwhelming pineapple flavour. I really enjoyed this curry. I choose chicken for my protein and it was very tender. If you like pineapple then do give it a try.

Red Curry

The Red Curry had one of my favourite vegetables in it - Kabocha Squash! They refer to it as "pumpkin" on the menu, so I don't know if they switch out different types of squash depending on availability. The vegetables were perfectly cooked. They still had a bite to them and were not overcooked. The curry sauce was mild. Very tasty curry.

coconut steamed rice

We had Coconut Steamed Rice. It had a very subtle coconut flavour. You can also choose plain steamed rice or sticky rice. You get a huge portion. We were a group of three and the two rice with the two curry and the two appetizers filled us up.

Taro Pearls in Sweetened Coconut Milk

Even though we were full, we had to try the desserts. They had three choices and all are gluten-free. Above is the Taro Pearls in Sweetened Coconut Milk. I enjoyed it, but my dinner companions were not sold on it. The taro was slightly salty, there were bits of corn and rice noodle? maybe in the coconut sweet soup. I think you either love or hate this dish.

Sticky Sweet Rice with Thai Custard

The Sticky Sweet Rice with Thai Custard was yummy. Everyone enjoyed it. The rice was warm and the custard cold which provided an interesting contrast. Not overly sweet and a very enjoyalbe way to finish your meal.

The third dessert offered is Coconut Ice Cream. We were here in the winter, but I would love to try it in the warm summer months.

the front of Khao San Thai Kitchen's menu

We all enjoyed our experience at Khao San Thai Kitchen. I highly recommend it. The food is good and the staff are wonderful. I think the prices are reasonable. It is a popular restaurant on 17th Ave in Calgary, so I do suggest you make a reservation. Do check out their story and menu on their website Khao San Thai Kitchen.
