I was so excited to hear that M&M Food Market have started to stock more gluten-free products. So, off I went to check them out! All their gluten-free products have the Canadian Celiac Association's seal of approval, that's to say they voluntarily went through the Gluten-Free Certification Program. If you'd like to read up on the certification process, here is a link to the Canadian Celiac Association's website.
For those of you who do not know, M&M Food Market is a frozen food store chain in Canada that stocks frozen meats, meals, vegetables, baked goods and appetizers. They used to be called M&M Meat Shops. Founded in 1980, by Michael Voisin and Mark Nowak in Ontario. For more information on this store and what they stock you can check out their website at www.mmfoodmarket.com.
Here is my review of some of the products I have tried. These reviews are based on my and my families personal tastes. You may like or dislike different ones. I haven't tried all their gluten-free products, just the ones I was able to buy this day. I'm looking forward to trying more as they become available. Disclaimer: I am not sponsored by M&M Food Market. I bought all the products I review myself.
We loved M&M's Crunchy Chicken Variety Pack. They come in three flavours: Parmesan Panko Chicken, Barbecue Chicken and Buffalo Chicken, along with the same flavoured sauces. The box has 21-24 pieces, which was fine as an appetizer for the three of us. You would need to buy a few boxes if you were having a party with more people. My favourite flavours were the Parmesan Panko and Barbecue. The Buffalo Chicken is good, but a bit spicy for my tastes, but if you like hot and spicy foods you will love these. The breading did not taste gluten-free, had a nice crunch, and the chicken was tender and not dry. I highly recommend these for holiday parties. Next time I'm in the city, I'm planning on stocking up on a few boxes. The non-celiacs loved them too!
The Panko Shrimp were also a hit. Again, great as a party appetizer. Loved the crunch of the coating, it is a light breading which you don't always get with gluten-free breaded products. I did find the breading came off on some of them, but perhaps I didn't bake them long enough. Have you tried them? How did yours turn out? The Spicy Chili and Lemon Aioli sauces were very tasty, it was nice to have the contrasting heat of the spicy chili and light lemony flavour of the aioli one. You will need a few boxes for a crowd. We will be buying this again.
I bought all four varieties of M&M's gluten-free stuffed potatoes. The four flavours are: Classic Stuffed Potatoes, Cheese Stuffed Potatoes, Broccoli and Cheese Stuffed Potatoes, and Gourmet Stuffed Potatoes. There are 6 half potatoes per box, and they are individually wrapped. They are tasty, but not as good as homemade, but perhaps that goes without saying. I tried both the microwave and oven methods. The oven is best because you get those nice crispy bits on top of the potato, but when I'm just heating up one, then I use the microwave. I do like having them on hand, for a quick side dish. My favourite is the Broccoli and Cheese. My husband thought they all tasted good. They do have a slight "instant" potato texture to them. That being said, I will buy them again just to have a quick side dish on hand for those busy days.
Sticking with the potato theme. I decided to try M&M's Homestyle Mashed Potatoes. I realize it is easy to peel, boil, and mash some potatoes, but sometimes you have had a busy day and just want a quick side or if you are travelling and only have access to a microwave then these would be a great addition to a gluten-free microwave meal. Which as we Celiacs know is essential when travelling. I heated them in the microwave. They do have a slight instant mash taste, but I liked them. I did find them quite thick, so I did thin mine out a little with some extra milk. Would I buy them again just to have on hand, most likely not, but I would buy them if I was travelling and unable to find a place to eat and was staying in a hotel with a microwave.
So very exicited to spot M&M's Gluten-free Fully Cooked Bacon. Oh, I love these. I really like bacon butties (bacon sandwiches), BLT's and crumbled bacon on baked potatoes or salads. These are great to have on hand. Each box has two packets of bacon. I cooked mine in the microwave and it was so easy, with minimal clean up. The one thing I dislike about cooking raw bacon is the mess. I will definitely have a box of these on hand for those days I just need some quick bacon. I loved the flavour and texture. They don't need to be refrigerated, so they also would be a great product for cooking in the microwave at a hotel. You'd just need to buy some gluten-free bread, a tomato and you have a lovely sandwich to eat when travelling.
M&M's Seasoned Breaded Cod. Very tasty. The cod is not fishy and has a lovely texture. The coating tastes the same as I remember 'gluten' coated fish to taste like. I love that we finally have options when it comes to breaded fish. I know you can make your own and I do sometimes, but on busy days, or if you are cooking for one, then these are great to have on hand. Lovely texture and flavour. I will buy again. I have tried the oven method and pan frying in a bit of oil. I prefer pan frying as I find you get a crunchier coating.
I love the convenience of M&M's Dessert Bars. I picked up the Dessert Bar Variety Pack which has three varieties: Walnut Brownie, Peppermint Nanaimo Bar and a Chocolate Coconut Bar. The flavours and textures are good. I found them very sweet, but the sweet tooth's in the family thought they were fine. The brownie has a dense cake-like texture and is very chocolatey. The chocolate coconut bar, had a nice chewy bite to it, along with the crunch of the coconut. I think I would prefer it without the chocolate, but I'm not a big chocolate fan, if you love chocolate than I think it is spot on. The Peppermint Nanaimo Bar is different. I'm not used to a peppermint flavour in my Nanaimo Bar. It was a pleasant flavour and good texture, but you'd have to like peppermint.
I didn't like intense coconut flavour of M&M's Nanaimo Bites. They are very cute little chocolate covered balls. The chocolate covering is tasty, and the filling is smooth and creamy. The filling does have a very strong coconut flavour which I didn't expect. I was expecting a custardy flavour like you have in regular Nanaimo Bars. The flavour reminded me of those Hostess coconut marshmallow Snowballs, that my Dad used to buy once and awhile. This was before I was diagnosed with celiac disease. I haven't seen any gluten-free ones. Do you remember them? They came two to a packet, were white or pink, and were often sold at gas station stores. If you like coconut flavour, then I think you would love these. If it's not your favourite flavour then give these a pass.
M&M's Chicken Pad Thai is a wonderful, and quick meal. The chicken is very tender, the rice noodles have a bit of a chew to them, and the thai sauce is very tasty and not too spicy. You can buy individual portions or a family size portion. I loved this meal. Will definitely buy again. Would be perfect as a microwave travel meal.
I have also tried M&M Foods Peanut Butter and Jam Bars. They were the first product I tried when I found them in May 2019, and we all loved them. Perfect balance of peanut butter and jam. I have used them as a dessert and taken them with me hiking. I say 'hiking', but its more like a slow, long walk. They are one of my favourites. Great to have in the freezer for when I need a quick dessert.
I thought I would share some of my more recent gluten-free purchases from M & M Foods. This part of the blog is updated as of June 15, 2023. I still find M & M's gluten-free food selection is great. They are always adding new products. I find them very handy to have in the freezer for those busy days. Above is a photo of some of the products I have tried.
Hadn't seen these before so I had to try their gluten-free Cauliflower Bites. They were tasty and crunchy, but there were not a lot of them. I would buy these at Christmas or New Year's for a holiday brunch, but you'd need to buy quite a few boxes.
We liked the gluten free Breaded Chicken Fillets, they were crispy and tender, but I think I prefer President's Choice gluten-free chicken strips. I wasn't that fond of the coating.
Loved M & M's gluten-free Chicken Pad Thai. I bought the family size. We'd just come back from a trip and hadn't had time to go food shopping, and therefore it was wonderful to have a meal I could just pop in the microwave. The noodles were not too soft and the sauce wasn't too sweet. I will buy this one again.
Now their gluten-free beef and bacon skewers were disappointing. They are very small and dry out when baked in the oven. I tried defrosting them in the fridge and frying them which did work out better. The fried version were juicy. They tasted good, but I won't be buying again. Another disappointment was the gluten-free Fiesta Frittata. It tasted ok, but was watery and spongy. My homemade ones are much tastier and don't take that much time to make, so that's one I wouldn't buy again.
Yes, I would buy M & M Foods gluten-free Spicy Sesame Chicken and Rice again. It was wonderful to have a quick meal to make ready to take out from the freezer. I loved the sweet and spicy flavours. There was plenty of chicken and the rice wasn't soggy. They use Korean gochujang which is one of my favourite tastes.
I made a meal using two of M & M Food's gluten-free fish products. The Haddock Tenders tasted good, but you didn't get very many, so that's why I also cooked up the Seasoned Breaded Cod. Out of the two, I preferred the cod. The haddock was a little too fishy flavoured for me. The coatings were nice and crispy. I don't know if I would buy either one again.
At the M&M Food Market I shopped at, the Food Advisor stated that more gluten-free products are going to be stocked. I'm really looking forward to trying them. Have you tried any of their gluten-free products? What did you think?
