Just look at that wonderful table with the delicious looking 100% gluten-free, celiac safe onion rings sitting in the middle just waiting to be devoured! I finally got to eat at the Selia Bar Restaurant located at 7222 Edgemont Blvd NW Calgary.
Above is the menu. Everything is 100% gluten-free and nut free. The non-celiacs in the family enjoyed the food too. It is so nice to just relax and not worry about cross-contamination. Everyone's food is gluten-free and celiac safe, so you don't have to be concerned that your plate has come in contact with a gluten containing plate of food when it is being prepared and brought to your table. Also a big plus is that you can try a bit of everyone's orders if that is what you like to do. Our family like to try eachothers orders. I was very happy and pleased to eat lunch at Seila Bar Restaurant.
I ordered the Spicy Fried Chicken Burger for my main. It was so very tasty. I loved a good chichen breast burger prior to my celiac diagnosis and I do miss them. This was a great opportunity to try a 100% gluten-free one and it did not disappoint. The chicken was crunchy, juicy and spicy. Loved the addition of coleslaw in the burger. The gluten-free bun didn't fall apart and had a nice texture. You could choose a side salad or fries and I went with the fries. They were great. They were crispy on the outside and soft inside. I would definitely order this again.
My husband ordered the Taco Al Pastor and he loved it. As everything is 100% gluten-free I had to taste test and I agreed that it was fantastic. The pork shoulder was tender, the taco filling provided a great sweetness that went well together. The corn tortilla's were tasty and stayed together. He had a side salad which was huge and the dressing was yummy. He said he would order again.
My son had the Garden Sandwich/Burger with fries. It was good. I also tasted it and found the began patties texture to be a bit soft for my tastes. But, the patty had a rich beany flavour. I think I tasted black beans. I was interested in the tomato mint jam, but I didn't notice it as the bean flavour was predominate. I personally would order it again. Don't get me wrong, it was good, but just not my favourite.
Here is a photo of the inside of the restaurant from our table. We were there at lunch time. There were quite a lot of people on the patio, and a few more started to fill the restaurant as time went by. Aren't those blue chairs so cute!
Here is another view of inside the restaurant. I liked the art and the feel of the place. Perfect for a dinner out. They have a gas/electric fire in the corner which would be lovely in the winter. There is also quite a large bar area. Everything was neat and tidy. Besides service, and food, I judge a restaurant by their bathrooms which were beautiful and spotless.
I couldn't get a photo of the entrance as it is under construction. So, while that is happening you enter from the patio side. This restaurant used to be known as the Common Bond Restaurant, and was in a different location. They closed and moved to Edgemont Blvd. They are in the Edgemont Athletic building. This is a very pretty location with plenty of parking. Selia Bar is a 100% gluten-free restaurant, so celiacs can relax and enjoy. The service was top notch. I will most definitly be back next time I'm in Calgary for dinner. Here is a link to their website if you are interested seliabar.com . They are also on facebook and instagram (seliabaryyc).
I thought I would end this blog with a photo of those delicious 100% gluten-free vidalia onion rings and the burnt onion aioli sauce. We had these as the appetizer and all loved them. Great crunch to the batter, not oily and lovely sweet onions. The sauce was nice, but I didn't notice it much as I was enjoying the actual onion rings. I love onion rings and was so happy to be able to order some.
We all enjoyed the food. The portions are generous. I have noticed that some reviews complain about the food being salty. We don't use a lot of salt at home, and we didn't find the food to be salty. I look forward to going back and trying their beignets. I hear that they are very good. This time we were too full for dessert. Next time I will leave room. ^_^
