cabbage and carrot salad with gluten-free creamy asian sesame mayonnaise dressing

Have you been looking for a gluten-free version of that yummy Asian Sesame Dressing that you see at Asian grocery stores? Well then give this tasty dressing a try.

I really miss the Japanese Creamy Sesame dressing I ate before my celiac diagnosis. The one I see in the stores has gluten soya sauce in it, so off limits for me. I played around with the ingredients listed below and I think this dressing is pretty close.

Just use gluten-free soya sauce and gluten-free mayonnaise. I prefer to use Japanese Shirakiku gluten-free mayonnaise, but use the gluten-free one you like. This recipe can easily be adjusted to your tastes. If you like it sweeter then add more sugar, if you want a more vinegar flavour then add more vinegar or try different types.

grinding toasted sesame seeds in a suribachi

I use a Japanese grinding bowl called a "suribachi" to grind the sesame seeds. You can buy them at Asian food stores.

toasting white sesame seeds

Remember it is important to lightly toast the sesame seeds, just until they start to pop. Toasted white sesame seeds have a lovely flavour.

adding sugar

After grinding the sesame seeds, add the sugar and grind a few more times.

add the rice vinegar

Add the rice vinegar and stir until mixed.

add the gluten-free soya sauce

Then add the gluten-free soya sauce and stir again.

add the gluten-free mayonnaise

Next add the gluten-free mayonnaise and mix well.

adding sesame seed oil

Lastly, add the sesame oil and combine well.

the finished creamy sesame mayonnaise dressing

Above is a photo of what the dressing should look like when you are finished. It is now ready to either put in a jar and in the fridge to use within a week, or to put on your favourite salad vegetables.

I like to put it on steamed spinach, or a thinnly sliced cabbage salad. I sometimes use it as a dip for carrots and cucumbers. It is a very versatile dressing.
